There is very limited public transport available in Mission Beach, Mission Beach taxi: https://missionbeachtaxi.com.au/
Mission Link bus: https://www.missionlink.com.au/
(Mission Link operates more like a taxi service than a bus service)
Car hire is highly recommended from the airport as Mission Beach is fairly isolated with limited transport options available.
It's a pretty easy drive from Cairns airport (and they drive on the left!) It's basically, 1 left, 1 right, drive for 77 miles on the highway, then take 1 more left, drive for a little bit more and you're there! Once in Mission Beach, roads are quiet, there's not a traffic light in sight and only 1 roundabout in the whole town!
Once You're There
Here are a few of our recommendations for exploring the local area.
Sky Dive Mission Beach
Fancy jumping out of a plane at 15,000ft, freefalling for 60 seconds at 200kmh with views of the rainforest, reef and 14km of beautiful sandy beach? Jo & Rich have done it, the Mother and Father of the bride have done it! Who's next?
White Water Rafting - Tully
The White Water Adventure of A Lifetime. Conquer grade 3 & 4 rapids on a wild ride through a spectacular gorge surrounded by World Heritage rainforest
Day Trip To Dunk Island
Venture out on a day trip to the stunning Dunk Island, once a bustling tourist resort which was destroyed during the devastating cyclone Yasi that hit the Mission Beach shores in 2011. If you fancy a hike, head up to the top of Mount Kootaloo which boasts spectacular views of the surrounding area. Near to the jetty there are toilets, showers, picnic tables and a free BBQ area available.
Take a trip to a Waterfall
Take a trip out to Millaa Millaa Waterfall, where Peter Andre's Mysterious Girl and the famous herbal essences advert were filmed. Other Local Water falls include the popular Josephine Falls and Murray Falls.
Fancy Staying Local?
Check out the Bingil Bay Cafe and the secluded beach just an 8 minute picturesque coastal drive north of Mission Beach. You could stop for a walk along the jetty on your way back or fancy a 4km circular walk with great views at the top? Head to the Bicton Hill walking trail. Or why not, take a slow drive to South Mission Beach, you'll probably see a wallaby or 2, and maybe even spot a cassowary.
Fancy a Lazy Day?
Hang out in Mission, hit the beach, sunbathe, go for a swim. Grab some lunch at one of the local bars/restaurants:
The Mission Beach Tavern, The Garage Bar & Grill, Plenty Restaurant, Buko at Castaways, The Pirate Den & The Blues Bar & Cafe.
There is also the Mission Beach Resort which is a 5 min drive down to Wongaling Beach, where you will also find the nearest (& only) supermarket, Woolworths & BWS bottle shop.
